Could truffles, the French export,
become an export for Kansas? The cooler hills of northwest Kansas may have potential for customized farming and branding of a truffle product for export. With its current high price return as a leading feature, with ever increasing demand, even if more producers come into the the production, this may be a resource that for future exploration and use for land that is not currently under production for other agriculture products. The down side, is that the orchard takes about seven years or more for the hazelnut bush to produce the truffle. However, the hazelnut, in itself, adds an additional product for both local and national sales. |
